One of the first quality books written on the subject of love and well-being was The Art of Loving by Eric Fromm. As an academician, Dr. Fromm took a scientific approach to the subject, providing insight into the mechanics of love and its counterfeits. It is still a popular book, used in university campuses, in Sociology and Psychology classes. It is considered a classic.
Dr. Gerald Jampolsky, a Psychiatrist, created a support group in California for children with terminal diseases, primarily cancer. (The Center for Attitudinal Healing) As an outgrowth of that work, he wrote Teach Only Love. This book is considered somewhat of a "New Age' approach to the concept of healing through love, but was received well by the public. It is still in print and has sold hundreds of thousands of copies.
Shortly after Jampolsky's book, Dr. Bernie Siegel, an Oncologist and Love, Medicine and Miracles. In his book, Dr. Siegel shares persosurgeon, wrote nal insight and emotions of a surgeon having to deal with patients with terminal diseases, (primarily cancer). He gives unique insight into exceptional and non-traditional methods of combating this disease. Although the medical profession scorned the book, it became a best seller and Dr. Siegel became an immediate celebrity. He has appeared on most T.V. talk shows, given talks throughout this country and throughout the world. Some hospitals now give a copy of his book to all of their cancer patients. This book has sold over a million copies.
In 1998, Dr. Dean Ornish wrote and published Love and Survival. As a cardiologist, Dr. Ornish was one of the first physicians to demonstrate through research that heart disease could be reversed. He then "franchised" his program of heart disease reversal throughout the U.S.A. Subsequently he wrote this book, which is essentially a sharing of the scientific research documenting the evidence of the positive effects of love on health.
Love and Health has all of these positive features. It is a recent book, following the theme of similarly successful books by Dr. Siegel. It grew out of a very personal life threatening condition. As a result of that threat, the author developed programs that were eventually accepted and used by many individuals, as well as a local hospital.
